What that means is, whether you decide to use fancy shaderpacks or resource packs, just installing OptiFine into your game is almost guaranteed to result in more FPS. It is for these reasons that OptiFine is one of the most popular Minecraft mods.
What is OptiFine?
OptiFine can be broadly described as a graphics-and-optimization mod. It adds a lot of features and flexibility to the way Minecraft is rendered, and it tweaks some parts of Minecrafts rendering that are slow or inefficient. Speaking of the flexibility OptiFine adds, one of the first things you'll notice when you install OptiFine is how many new ‘video options' you are presented with. Some examples of this are the ability toggle whether the game uses ‘fast' or ‘fancy' techniques when rendering things like clouds, leaves and fog, or whether swamp biomes are rendered with a darker color palette. But where OptiFine really shines are all of the new features it adds, such as support for shaders, or ‘shaderpacks' as they are called.
What are Minecraft Shaders?
Shaderpacks are little programs that you can write to change the way Minecraft's rendering engine works. This opens up a lot of possibilities for what can be done. Simple shaderpacks, such as Acid Shaders or Jelly World, make the terrain warp and bend around in disorienting ways. More complicated shaderpacks can add realistic water reflections, sunlight and shadows, and can even implement super realistic ray-traced lighting effects. There are many different types of Minecraft shaders, and installing OptiFine is the first step to getting started with them.
What are HD resource packs?
Resource packs are packages that contain alternate texture or audio files for Minecraft to use. HD texture packs are just texture packs with very large texture files. This is in contrast to Minecraft's default textures, which are 16×16 pixels. With OptiFine, you can use resource packs that have gigantic 2048×2048 textures, the Stratum resource pack is a good example of this.

How to Install OptiFine (without Minecraft Forge):
- Click here to download the version of OptiFine that matches the version of Minecraft you are using.
- If you are using a recent version of Minecraft, you may have to click on 'Preview versions' for OptiFine
- Run the OptiFine .jar file that you downloaded and click 'Install'
- If your computer cannot open the file, you don't have the Java Runtime installed. Click here to download and install the Java Runtime.
- Launch Minecraft and select the OptiFine profile that was created.
- Verify that OptiFine is working correctly by navigating to Options→Video Settings… After completing these steps, there should be more video settings than before.
After completing the installation, make sure to try out some shaderpacks, such as SEUS Renewed or Sildurs Shaders.
How to InstallOptiFine (with Minecraft Forge):
- Click here to download and install Minecraft Forge.
- Click here to download the version of OptiFine that matches the version of Minecraft you are using.
- Open the ‘mods' folder for your Minecraft Game
- Launch Minecraft and run the newly created Minecraft Forge profile.
- Navigate to Options→Resource Packs…, then click 'Open Pack Folder'
- A Windows Explorer, or MacOS Finder window will open in your resource packs folder. Navigate up one folder, and you should see the ‘saves' and ‘mods' folders for your game.
- Place the OptiFine .jar file that you downloaded into the ‘mods' folder.
- Restart Minecraft, then verify that OptiFine is working correctly by navigating to Options→Video Settings… There should be more video settings than before.
